Haribo gummy bears are well known all around the world. Part of the reason that they are so well known is that they have been around for so long. In fact, this famous company has been around since 1920 and was founded in Bonn, Germany. cool dab rigs The company was started by a gentleman by the name of Hans Riegel Sr. What many people don’t know is that the name Haribo is actually an acronym based on the name Hans Riegel and Bonn.

The candies were becoming well known, but after Hans Riegel Sr. died in World War II his son took over and really expanded the operations by taking over the operations of many different confectioners from around the world. This expansion was a great move because today the brand is the biggest manufacturer of gummi sweets in the world. The company mostly produces their gummi bears, gummi candies such as their frogs, and licorice.

Today the Haribo name is associated with five different favorites in Germany and 13 others that are spread throughout the rest of Europe. In addition, there are sales offices located in just about every European country as well as in the United States. The United States has been getting the products imported from German food importers for many years. In the beginning they were just sold at German markets and gourmet stores. In the 1980’s Haribo of America was founded and this is when the candies began being sold to the mass market and that is why they can be found in most grocery stores and even some discounted stores.

Because of the popularity of Haribo in the United States there has been a steady stream of German candies being introduced to the U.S. market. While all of them have been received quite well, none has been as popular as long as Haribo. For the first couple years after Haribo was introduced they actually could not keep up with the supply in demand.

Today you will find Haribo packaged a couple of different ways. In the stores you will generally find the gummy type candies packaged in a soft plastic wrapper that will easily hang or be stacked for easy stocking. A special packaging was actually developed for theatres, so when you visit a movie theatre you will find the gummy delights in a cardboard box along with most of the other candies available at the movie theatre.

The Haribo name certainly has come a long, long way since 1920 when it was started by Hans Riegel Sr. While it was his son who upped the ante and really took the world by storm, no one could say that the senior Riegel wouldn’t be happy with the success of the confectionary business he started so long ago.
